Cassiobury River Study

Today we visited our local park to investigate river depth and speed, working canal lock systems, exploring erosion and deposition and surveying land use. We are so lucky to have this great learning resource so close by. We learnt lots, played a bit and most of us got very wet!

Year 6 Leaving a Legacy

Today we planted some of the many free trees from the Woodland Trust extending and replenishing the boundaries of our forest. The children spoke of revisiting in 50 years to see their tree!

Woodland Trust Planting day.

Today we were part of something special. We planted 225 trees in the UK’s largest community planted forest the size of 400 football pitches. Help by the Woodland Trust we planted Oak trees which will probably be felled and made into furniture in 150 years time. We imagined future designs and helped support future generations.

This afternoon in year 1 the stormy weather stopped us from taking our learning into the Forest so we embraced the wild weather on the field and explored wind speed and direction with our kites. We are lucky to have so much space to learn in.

Today we were treated to a felt making work shop by a local crafter. We got very wet and soapy but handmade some beautiful poppies for an art instillation coming soon to Leavesden Country park.

Learning about Mice

The children enjoyed investigating what it would be like to be a mouse in the forest. We tried to imagine what it would be like to be tiny by climbing over and under objects. The children used directional language to find cheese and developed their listening skills through playing cat and mouse.

Follow the Swallows

After reading Follow the Swallow by Julia Donaldson we explored the journey migrating animals take around the world and what environments they pass through.

The children followed the route of the swallows in atlases, sorted animals into groups that migrate, hibernate and adapt and painted our own pictures of migrating swallows.

Investigating Stone Henge in Year 3

We got back into the swing of things today in Year 3 by introducing the Stone Age project and investigating Stone Henge.

The children tried to find ways to move heavy blocks using rods and marbles and built their own versions of Stone Henge.

They also painted sunrises through the stones by mixing different shades of a single colour.
